WFP USA Embraces Crypto Donations to Combat Hunger Crisis

In a move to raise vital funds to address hunger in some of the world’s most vulnerable regions, the World Food Program USA (WFP USA) has now opened its doors to cryptocurrency donations.

With over 80 cryptocurrencies accepted, donors can contribute through popular coins like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDC, as well as through less mainstream options such as ApeCoin, BONK, and Dogecoin.

$25 Million Target for Emergency Hunger Relief Fund

The nonprofit organisation has set an ambitious target of $25 million for its Emergency Hunger Relief Fund, which aims to provide crucial support to the 58 million people facing starvation worldwide.

WFP USA, which has been active since 1995, works as an independent entity closely aligned with the UN World Food Programme (WFP), and its new crypto initiative is part of a broader effort to modernise fundraising approaches.

The Growing Need for Modern Solutions

WFP USA’s chief philanthropy and partnerships officer, Dorota Amin, highlighted the pressures on traditional aid systems.

She said,

"Traditional aid systems are under immense pressure. Embracing new technologies like blockchain and cryptocurrency isn’t just a choice—it’s necessary."

The global hunger crisis continues to deepen, and amid shrinking humanitarian budgets, blockchain technology offers an innovative way to ensure funds reach those in need more efficiently.

The Crypto Advantage: Lower Fees and Faster Transfers

Donors choosing to contribute via cryptocurrency benefit from lower transaction fees, which ensures that a larger portion of their donation directly supports relief efforts.

Additionally, blockchain's speed enables funds to be processed in mere minutes, rather than taking days as is often the case with traditional methods.

Donations are also tax-deductible, offering a financial incentive for those looking to offset capital gains.

Pressure on the White House to Reconsider Cuts to UN Aid

This move towards crypto donations comes in the wake of a significant reduction in funding for urgent UN food aid initiatives.

Under the Trump administration, US support for critical UN programmes in 14 impoverished countries, including Afghanistan, Syria, and Yemen, was cut.

The UN World Food Programme has already made significant strides in using blockchain to streamline aid delivery through its Building Blocks initiative.

By utilising digital wallets, aid is provided directly to refugees, drastically reducing transaction costs by up to 98%.

This system also minimises fraud and eliminates the need for local banks, ensuring that funds reach their intended recipients without unnecessary delays or costs.

White House Signals Reversal on UN Funding Cuts

According to Reuters, the White House announced plans to reinstate some UN World Food Programme funding on Wednesday.

However, this is contingent on the WFP modifying certain programmes in specific countries.
