CZ’s New Messaging Feature Faces Challenges of Spam and High Demand

Changpeng Zhao, the former CEO of Binance, has introduced an innovative approach to managing the flood of messages he receives daily—through a feature called “Pay to Reach.”

The service, built on the ReachMe.io platform, allows users to pay in Binance's own BNB token to send a direct message to CZ, with a guarantee of a response within five days.

If no reply is given, the user is refunded 50% of the fee.

The system aims to reduce spam and streamline communication, but its implementation has not been without challenges.

ReachMe.io’s Concept Takes Shape

The idea behind ReachMe.io arose from CZ’s frustration with the sheer volume of messages he received on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter).

He wrote an X post on 27 March, recounting his Binance Square article in which he had previously proposed the concept of a pay-to-message system to manage his inbox more effectively.

A few days after the article was posted, a developer approached him with a working prototype of the ReachMe platform, which quickly caught his attention.

ReachMe allows users to send messages to notable figures like CZ, provided they pay a fee, thereby ensuring more meaningful interactions and reducing spam.

Initial Pricing Struggles and Spam Overload

When the feature was first introduced, CZ set the price for sending a message at 0.04 BNB (roughly $24).

However, this lower fee quickly resulted in an overwhelming number of messages.

Many users took advantage of the low cost to send trivial messages, such as “yo,” “how was your dinner,” or “check out this memecoin,” which were of little value to CZ.

In response to this flood of messages, he increased the price to 0.1 BNB, about $63, and then again to 0.2 BNB, roughly $126.

Despite these increases, the spam continued, prompting him to raise the price even further.

As of today, the cost to send a message to CZ stands at 1 BNB, approximately $631.

He is now aiming to find a balance where he only receives about 10 meaningful messages per day.

The Motivation Behind Pay to Reach

In his original post announcing the feature, CZ explained that his goal was not to make money from the service but to streamline communication.

When he set the price to 0.2 BNB, he found himself processing through 200 messages, admitting,

“I created a lot of work for myself.”

As he had previously stated,

“I will adjust the price to try to hit a sweet spot of about 10 messages per day.”

He subsequently increased the price to 1 BNB.

The concept behind Pay to Reach is simple — charge a fee for messages that will guarantee a response.

This way, influencers like CZ can manage their time and focus on more serious, valuable communication, while also discouraging spam.

KOLs Join the Pay to Reach Model

Since the announcement, more than 70 Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) have joined ReachMe.io, setting their own message prices.

These influencers, mainly from the crypto world, are using the platform to filter through messages, offering users the chance to get a response for a fee.

The message prices for these figures range from 0.01 BNB to 0.5 BNB, adding another layer of exclusivity to interactions with crypto industry giants.

Risks of Commercialising Communication

While some see Pay to Reach as a smart solution to the growing problem of social media overload, others view it as an attempt to commercialise communication in a way that excludes those who cannot afford to pay.

The platform has raised questions about access, as only those willing to pay the high price tags can connect with influential figures like CZ.

Despite the benefits of reducing spam and ensuring more meaningful exchanges, the model may limit communication to a privileged few.
