Canadian Woman Sues Over SIM Card Hack Leading to Bitcoin Loss

According to PANews, a Canadian woman, Raelene Vandenbosch, has filed a lawsuit against Rogers Communications and Match Transact, alleging security failures that led to a SIM card hijacking attack in 2011. This incident resulted in the loss of 12.58 bitcoins, valued at $392,700 at the time, now worth approximately $1.36 million. The lawsuit claims that an employee at a Montreal-authorized mobile counter provided database access to a hacker posing as a telecom technician, allowing the transfer of Vandenbosch's phone number. The attacker subsequently accessed her Ledger and Shakepay cryptocurrency wallets. The plaintiff accuses the defendants of inadequate anti-fraud measures and excessive access to sensitive user information by counter staff. The British Columbia Supreme Court has ruled that the main aspects of the case should proceed to arbitration. However, the request for a "public acknowledgment of fault" will continue in court due to its public interest implications. The defendants have not admitted to the allegations and insist that the matter should be resolved through arbitration as per the user agreement.
