EU Chat Control Legislation Faces Opposition, Delayed Until December Vote

According to PANews, Telegram founder Pavel Durov revealed that the European Union's 'chat control' legislation was nearly passed, but was postponed due to temporary opposition from Germany. The next vote is anticipated in December. France has been advocating for applications to conduct client-side scanning of all private chats, with exemptions proposed for communications involving law enforcement and officials. Durov noted that the legislation requires approval from member states representing 65% of the EU population to pass. Currently, Germany, Poland, Austria, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Finland, Luxembourg, and Belgium oppose the 'chat control' bill, preventing it from reaching the necessary threshold. French political figures, including Bruno Retailleau and Laurent Nuñez, have expressed support for the legislation. Durov stated that he will continue to alert users in various countries, as the vote may be revisited in December.
