Telegram And WeChat Apply For Licenses Under Malaysia's New Rules

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission(MCMC) has announced that Telegram and Tencent's WeChat have initiated the process of obtaining the necessary license to operate their platform in Malaysia.

MCMC has commended both telegram and Tencent for adhering to the licensing requirements. Both platforms are expected to meet the necessary requirements to operate in Malaysia soon, regulators said.

MCMC explained that the licensing requirement is to ensure online safety, user protection, and regulatory oversign for internet messaging and social media service providers.

This framework aimed to foster greater trust and a safer online environment by urging service providers to protect users, particularly children and vulnerable groups.

Malaysians are expected to benefit from this new policy, and they can expect improved security, better user experience, and increased protection against harmful content.

All service providers hoping to get the licensing is required to submit their application before the deadline- December 31. All social media and internet messaging services with at least eight million registered users in Malaysia has to apply for the Class Licence.
