Tokenized silver liquidations explode on crypto rails

Silver suffered a brutal collapse, falling more than 17% in just 24 hours and wiping out a short-lived rebound as selling pressure spilled across global markets. The sharp move dragged gold and copper lower as well, exposing how thin liquidity and crowded speculative bets can turn routine volatility into a full-scale rout.

The fallout was especially violent in crypto-linked markets. On Hyperliquid, traders witnessed one of the platform’s largest liquidation events tied to tokenized commodities, with roughly $17.75 million in XYZ:SILVER positions forcibly closed.

Nearly $16.82 million of those liquidations came from long positions, showing how aggressively rebound trades were unwound once prices rolled over.

The imbalance underscored a familiar pattern: traders leaned into a bounce using leverage, only to be flushed out when volatility spiked again. In this environment, leverage didn’t just magnify losses — it accelerated them.

Burry’s “collateral death spiral” plays out in real time

The cascade mirrors warnings issued earlier this week by hedge fund manager Michael Burry, who described a looming “collateral death spiral” linking crypto and traditional markets.

As metals prices rise, traders increasingly use tokenized silver and gold as collateral to build leveraged positions. But when Bitcoin slides, the value of that crypto collateral shrinks, triggering margin calls that force investors to liquidate metals positions — even profitable ones.

That forced selling then pushes metals lower, deepening losses and creating a feedback loop that can briefly make silver and gold more destructive than Bitcoin itself on liquidation leaderboards.

Burry specifically cautioned that institutional players could be compelled to dump tokenized metals holdings if crypto collateral deteriorates fast enough — a scenario that now appears to be unfolding.

Leverage, not macro, is driving the chaos

While macro narratives still hover in the background — including uncertainty around Federal Reserve leadership, rate expectations, and President Donald Trump’s resistance to a more hawkish policy stance — traders say those factors are no longer the primary drivers.

Instead, positioning and forced deleveraging are overwhelming fundamentals. The silver crash resembles past commodity wipeouts where crowded trades, thin liquidity, and automated liquidations combined to overwhelm macro logic entirely.
