It seems the Elon Musk is going to have a long chat with Grok, after the AI machine was revealed to be a vocal democrat during a social experiment conducted by software engineer Alex Cole.
The conversation thread was uploaded on X, with the first shot fired by Cole when he asked Grok which political party has been better for the economy for the past 30 years.
Grok responses-seen by thousands-delivered an answer that seemingly contradicted its creators' political stance.
"Since WWII, Democrats have outperformed Republicans on the economy," Grok replied, citing historical data. "GDP growth averages 4.23% under Democrats versus 2.36% under Republicans. Job creation? 1.7% yearly for Democrats, 1.0% for Republicans."
It continued, noting that nine of the last ten U.S. recessions began under Republican presidents—a statement that quickly went viral, garnering over 33,000 likes.
Grok stuck in infinite loop, saying democrats are better
Grok's vocal support for the democratic party is shocking, given its creator's strong support for President Trump.
Since President Trump started his campaign early last year, Musk has been like a right hand man to Trump, not only supporting Trump administratively but also helping Trump to leverage on his fan base.
Even after his election, Musk continues to aid the Trump administration through the unofficial DOGE organisation.
But Grok remained firm in its stance that the democratic party is the superior political party, at one point even cheekily said "Data speaks louder than party lines."
Even when it was signaled to stop, Grok didn't give up adn continued to repeat its stance with some minor alterations.
It didn't take long for others to join in the conversation. One user on X asked
"Hey Grok, who was the better economic president in terms of jobs, GDP, unemployment and stock market:Trump or Biden?"
Unsurprisingly, Grok answered Biden, quoting states that Biden added 15.7M jobs, with employment dropping to 3.4% while the number of jobs dropped by 2.6% under the Trump administration.
An article by media outlet Futurism found out that Grok's answer was quoted from a Wiki page, titled: The U.S economic performance by presidential party.
Aren't Generative AI politically neutral
Some might be shocked by Grok's answer, because generative AI are often regarded to be politically neutral.
When ChatGPT was once asked about his political bias, it answered
"I am an AI language model developed by OpenAI and do not have personal opinions, beliefs and political bias."
But it seems that Grok is not the only generative AI that supports the democratic party because ChatGPT-produced by another company OpenAI-is also accidentally revealed that it was a fan of Vice President Kamala Harris.
This comes after it tried to convince voters to vote for Harris but refused to convince voters to vote for Trump.
So the interesting question now is will Elon Musk reprogram Grok to make it a republican, or will he let the data speak for itself?
It is also worrying that something that is so widely and heavily dependent on today could so vehemently impose its political view on its users.
