Bitfinex CTO Paolo Ardoino reveals that a reported $15 billion XRP transfer to Bitfinex on Jan. 14 was part of a failed exploit. The attempted attack, labeled as a "Partial Payments Exploit," aimed to take advantage of a potential misconfiguration in Bitfinex's software.

Failed Exploit on Bitfinex
Blockchain tracker Whale Alert initially highlighted a transaction of 25.6 billion XRP from an unknown wallet to Bitfinex. However, the post was later deleted due to an issue with reading the Ripple node response. Ardoino clarified that someone attempted to attack Bitfinex using a Partial Payments Exploit, assuming a misconfiguration that only reads the "amount" field of an XRP transaction.
How the Exploit Works
In a Partial Payments Exploit, the attacker sends a transaction with a high "amount" field but specifies a much smaller amount in another field. The goal is to receive credit for the difference from the targeted company. The attacker anticipated that Bitfinex had improperly configured its system to process partial payments.
Bitfinex's Resilience
Despite the attempt, Ardoino assured that Bitfinex thwarted the attack as the platform properly handles the 'delivered_amount' data field. The exploit's failure safeguards Bitfinex's integrity against potential vulnerabilities.
Wider Attempt on Binance
The attacker also targeted Binance with a 58.9 billion XRP transfer, which similarly failed. The unsuccessful attempts on both Bitfinex and Binance underscore the resilience of major cryptocurrency exchanges against potential exploits.
