California Imposes Limits on Bitcoin ATMs Amid Rising Scams

Jim Meduri experienced a harrowing scam where scammers, posing as his son in distress, manipulated him into sending $15,000 through a Bitcoin ATM. This incident highlights a growing trend of fraudsters exploiting Bitcoin ATMs, prompting concerns from law enforcement officials. The ease of buying cryptocurrency with cash at these machines, found in various locations, facilitates quick transactions that are harder to trace than wire transfers or checks.

In response to the escalating issue, California has signed Senate Bill 401 into law, limiting cryptocurrency ATM transactions to $1,000 per day per person starting January. The legislation also caps fees at $5 or 15% of the transaction, starting in 2025. With over 3,200 Bitcoin ATMs in California, the move aims to protect consumers from scams, giving them more time to recognize deceit and preventing large cash sums from being used for crypto purchases.

Despite concerns from crypto ATM operators, who argue that the law could harm their industry and associated small businesses, lawmakers stress the necessity of addressing real problems affecting communities. The bill strives to strike a balance between supporting the cryptocurrency industry and safeguarding consumers. California's recent legislative trend leans towards tighter state regulation, emphasizing the need to protect individuals from crypto-related fraud.

Erin West, a Santa Clara County deputy district attorney, highlighted the scammers' preference for Bitcoin ATMs due to their acceptance of large cash amounts. Scams often involve creating a false sense of urgency and establishing trust with victims. West's team successfully recovered $2.5 million for scam victims by tracing transactions through cryptocurrency exchanges, emphasizing the critical role of law enforcement cooperation in combating crypto-related crimes.
