Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong responded to an open letter from some community members addressed to Base. The letter pointed out that Base recently seemed to favor a creator economy rather than an on-chain economy as its core framework, and frequently promoted creator tokens. In response, Armstrong stated that Base's positioning is not singular; its uses cover a variety of scenarios, including payments, trading, DeFi, and building applications and companies. Coinbase's goal is to ensure that every developer on Base receives a fair share of revenue. He further pointed out that social feeds play a crucial role in content distribution, not only helping emerging applications, businesses, and developers gain exposure, but also applicable to investment information, prediction markets, social trading functions, and various alpha and insight content. Armstrong believes that cryptocurrency itself can serve as an effective ranking and incentive mechanism, and because of the real value exchange involved, it is more difficult to manipulate than the bot-driven engagement common in traditional social media. Furthermore, he mentioned that a feed system equipped with native cryptocurrency like functionality is significant, but it is currently impossible to determine which type of content will ultimately perform best in the feed; it still needs to be iterated and validated through actual posting and continuous collection of user behavior data.
