Polish Town Launches Local Stablecoin MinsCoin for Community Engagement

According to Blockworks, the Polish town of Mińsk Mazowiecki has launched a stablecoin called MinsCoin, which users can spend at local businesses. The launch coincides with the introduction of UrbanChange, a platform that creates USDC-backed stablecoins for local use in cities. MinsCoin aims to provide a new way for people to engage with local businesses and community projects, potentially offering insights into the impact of such technologies on social interactions, economic participation, and community solidarity. UrbanChange co-founder Michael Mazur revealed that up to 10 businesses in Mińsk Mazowiecki would support MinsCoin at launch, with expectations for many more to join in the future. UrbanChange described the currency as a 'shopper-friendly money' that will circulate locally in Mińsk Mazowiecki. Israel-based Colu Technologies, the core contributor to UrbanChange, has developed apps for similar programs in several US cities, including Houston, Boston, and Utica, NY. The Polish deployment marks UrbanChange's first European venture, with plans to launch coins in other European cities and Jerusalem. Communities interested in launching one of UrbanChange's LocalCoins need to front 5,000 of the project's UCT token, according to the project's white paper. Individuals can earn LocalCoins by participating in initiatives aimed at achieving specific social or economic goals, such as promoting healthy lifestyles or public transportation. Whitelisted businesses can accept payment in LocalCoins and increase circulation by transacting with other whitelisted businesses using the LocalCoin. Mińsk Mazowiecki's mayor, Marcin Jakubowski, stated that they are building an innovative blockchain hub in the city, with UrbanChange playing a significant role in engaging the community and achieving goals in sustainability, health and wellbeing, and social activism. MinsCoin and other UrbanChange stablecoins are made possible through various Web3 partnerships, including USDC, the Algorand blockchain, and wallet-as-a-service provider Magic. The protocol's development roadmap also includes plans for deployment on Ethereum layer-2 solutions, such as Base.
