Binance.US interim CEO Norman Reed published a column stating that the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s approach to regulating digital assets is flawed and that trying to “kill cryptocurrencies” is a serious overreach. The article stated that the regulatory agency has lost its way when it comes to digital assets, and the SEC is trying to seize jurisdiction over digital assets when the U.S. Congress or courts have not yet authorized such jurisdiction. Norman Reed said that instead of working with the U.S. Congress and its sister agencies to develop a comprehensive regulatory plan by adopting rules after cost-benefit analysis and public comment, the SEC is marking its jurisdiction with one-off enforcement cases, This is not how the SEC responds to new and innovative financial instruments and technologies.
