Elon Musk said U.S. data centers will face a severe power shortage next year. According to Sina Finance, the SpaceX CEO responded on Saturday to an exclusive report from The Information that said SpaceX is preparing to build a factory to produce turbine vanes and blades to help avoid the power shortage facing AI data centers.
Musk said on X that SpaceX casting vanes and blades in-house could bring the deployment of natural gas turbines forward by up to 18 months, calling it a major disruptive change. He also said the move was crucial.
According to Sina Finance, Grok estimated that 15 gigawatts of AI chips will be unable to power on next year because of shortages in electricity and other equipment supply, and that chips with that power demand would be worth hundreds of billions of dollars. The Information had reported two weeks earlier that data center developers working with Google, Microsoft, and Oracle were facing multiple pressures on new projects, including Oracle data center costs that were billions of dollars above expectations, misconceptions about AI data centers, and rising costs and energy challenges for OpenAI's Stargate supercomputing data center project.
