Nobitex, Iran's largest cryptocurrency exchange, was founded by members of the Kharrazi family, who have close ties to Iran's supreme leadership. Investigations reveal that the exchange was created by brothers Ali and Mohammad Kharrazi, who used the surname "Aghamir" to conceal their connection to the Kharrazi family, which has long maintained close ties to Iran's political core, including historical links to Ali Khamenei and his successors. The report notes that Nobitex currently serves over 11 million users, dominates the Iranian cryptocurrency market, and continued operating during the conflict between Iran and the US and Israel, processing transactions even during a nationwide internet outage. Analysts claim that its trading volume exceeded $100 million during the war, with significant funds flowing overseas. Furthermore, multiple on-chain analytics firms have indicated that the platform processed transactions related to sanctioned entities, estimated at between $22 million and $366 million. Additional data shows that wallets linked to the Central Bank of Iran transferred hundreds of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency assets to Nobitex in 2025, believed to be used to circumvent financial sanctions. Nobitex denied any connection to the government, stating that illicit trading constituted only a small portion of its overall business. (Cointelegraph)
