Two sources familiar with the matter said that Trump plans to be briefed on Thursday by U.S. Central Command Commander Brad Cooper on new plans for potential military action against Iran. This briefing indicates that Trump is seriously considering resuming large-scale military operations to break the deadlock in negotiations or deliver a decisive blow before ending the war. Three sources said that Central Command has prepared a plan for a “short but powerful” strike against Iran, potentially including targets on infrastructure. The expectation is that Iran will subsequently show greater flexibility on its nuclear program and return to the negotiating table. Another option expected to be presented to Trump is controlling portions of the Strait of Hormuz to restore commercial shipping. One source said such an operation could involve ground troops. Another option, previously discussed and likely to be presented in the briefing, is conducting special forces operations to secure control of Iran’s highly enriched uranium stockpile. Cooper briefed Trump similarly on February 26, two days after the U.S. and Israel launched their war against Iran. A person close to Trump said that briefing was what prompted Trump’s decision to go to war. (Jinshi)
