Tokyo Gas announced on April 27 that it will increase its base fees for the first time in nearly half a century to offset rising costs and declining demand. According to Jin10, the company stated that the monthly bill for average households will rise by approximately 2.6% starting in October. A spokesperson noted that this marks the first adjustment to the fixed fee portion, or base charge, since 1980. The price hike reflects increased costs necessary to maintain services, including expenditures for call centers, information systems, and investments to ensure the safety of gas equipment. This move comes as Japanese households and businesses face rising inflation, with the Middle East conflict driving up gasoline and electricity costs. The variable portion of electricity and gas bills, known as the fuel cost adjustment, is updated monthly based on changes in overseas prices.
