U.S. President Donald Trump said in a phone interview on Tuesday that the United States would not return to Pakistan for any future peace talks with Iran. This came after a marathon negotiation over the weekend failed to reach an agreement. “Things are happening, but a little slow,” he said. “We might choose another location; we have alternatives in mind.” When asked if Turkey was being considered, Trump said, “No, somewhere more central. Maybe Europe.” After a brief exchange with the reporter, Trump called again to add, “You should stay there. Something might happen in the next two days. We’re more inclined to go to Pakistan. Because that Field Marshal did a great job.” He was referring to Pakistani Field Marshal Asim Munir. Trump established contact with Munir during last year’s Indo-Pakistani war, which resulted in a peace agreement reached in just four days with U.S. mediation. “He was great, so we’re more likely to go back,” Trump said. “Why go to a country that has nothing to do with this?” (Jin Shi)
