A French couple in their 50s were robbed in their home in western Paris by fake police officers and forced to transfer approximately €900,000 (about $1 million) in Bitcoin. The incident occurred Monday morning when three suspects posing as police officers broke into their home in Le Chesnay-Rocquencourt, threatening the couple with knives and forcing the husband to transfer Bitcoin. The perpetrators then tied up the man, injuring both of them, and fled in a white van. The wife rescued her husband and called the police and neighbors around 9 a.m. local time. The case is being investigated by the French anti-violent crime unit, with charges including unlawful detention, organized armed robbery, and conspiracy. As of Tuesday, no arrests had been reported. This case reflects the rise of "wrench attacks" targeting cryptocurrency holders. Data from the cybersecurity platform CertiK shows that 72 such cases were verified globally in 2025, a 75% increase from the previous year, with France accounting for 19 of them, the highest number globally.
