Vitalik commented on “ENS stops L2 Namechain development, v2 will be deployed directly on the Ethereum mainnet”, saying: “This is a wise decision. ENS domains and records are the core state of the Ethereum ecosystem. I think the best architecture for decentralized identity and social (which I think ENS is in) is to store this kind of account and profile data for each user on L1 and use a dedicated L2 (which is probably much simpler than the full EVM) to handle user actions (e.g., actions on social platforms).”
