Cryptocurrency Hacks in 2025 Lead to $3.3 Billion in Losses

According to ChainCatcher, data from blockchain security firm CertiK reveals that cryptocurrency hackers stole $3.3 billion in 2025. Supply chain vulnerabilities emerged as the most destructive threat, with just two incidents accounting for $1.45 billion in losses. The average loss per hack was $5.3 million, marking a 66% increase from the previous year. However, the data also indicates a significant decrease in the number of security incidents, with 162 fewer cases compared to the previous year. This suggests an improvement in protocol-level security, pushing attackers away from simple code vulnerabilities towards phishing and infrastructure-level attacks. Phishing scams have become the second largest threat, resulting in a total loss of $722 million across 248 incidents for cryptocurrency investors.
