Ethereum's Vision for Widespread Adoption Highlighted at ETHShanghai 2025

According to PANews, at the ETHShanghai 2025 main forum, Hsiao-Wei Wang, Co-Executive Director of the Ethereum Foundation, delivered a speech titled 'Ethereum's Widespread Adoption: Bridging the Gap.' She outlined Ethereum's vision for mass adoption through three key aspects: autonomous control, global settlement capabilities, and everyday utility. Autonomous control aims to empower users to truly own their assets. Global settlement capabilities focus on enabling value to transcend geographical boundaries, enhancing overall efficiency and providing global verification. Everyday utility seeks to integrate blockchain and Ethereum seamlessly into daily life, similar to the internet, such as in routine transactions. Wang identified three major challenges Ethereum faces before bridging the gap: scalability and high costs, experience gaps, and trust deficits. For scalability, Ethereum's strategy involves Layer 1 and Layer 2 solutions, with a core focus on achieving high throughput and low-cost transactions through Layer 2 Rollups. Key upgrades include Dencun (EIP-4844), Pectra (2025 Q1), and Fusaka (2025 Q4). In terms of account and user experience, the concept of account abstraction is introduced through proposals like ERC-4337, EIP-7701, and EIP-7702, which aim to transform user accounts into programmable contracts, supporting social recovery wallets, gas fee payments, and batch transaction functionalities. Regarding infrastructure development, Wang emphasized the importance of secure and stable mainchain facilities and the normalization of financial activities. She stated that Ethereum's future goal is to become unseen, akin to the internet, silently relied upon and trusted. True mass adoption will occur not because of Ethereum's size, but due to its ubiquity, transparency, and reliability, achieving its value when it exists naturally like air.
