Donald Trump has unveiled his largest AI infrastructure project, codenamed Stargate. Trump will be working with other giant tech companies like OpenAI, Oracle, and Japan's Softbanks to construct a vast network of data centres across the United States that would create the critical in supporting the artificial intelligence development in the country.
The three tech companies has promised to invest $100 billion the project to start with plans to pour up to $500 billion into Stargate in the coming years. Trump is also claims that his new project would create over 100,000 new jobs for Americans "almost immediately."
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son and Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison appear at the White House on Tuesday afternoon with President Trump to announce the project.
During the press conference, Sam Altman called the project the most important project of this era, touting that this AI development would contribute greatly to the healthcare industry.
"I believe that as this technology progresses, we will see diseases get cured at an unprecedented rate."
Most important project of this era
This project marks Trump's first major business initiatives since returning to office and comes as the U.S. Strive to maintain its competitive edge over China in AI advancement.
In his White House press event, President Trump expressed his concern that the U.S is competing with not just China, but also other countries when it comes to AI development. But he is determined for the U.S to be ahead of its other competitors when it comes to AI breakthroughs.
President Trump also said that he is willing to even consider this project as a country emergency so as to expedite the project's development, particularly regarding energy infrastructure, which is one of the fundamental criteria that would power the AI development.
The initiative comes just one day after Trump reversed predecessor Joe Biden's more than 100-page executive order on AI safety standards and content watermarking, signalling a decisive shift in US artificial intelligence policy.
This also marks a shift in the direction of US artificial intelligence policy, prioritizing rapid development and infrastructure expansion over regulatory safeguards.
Elon Musk accusing Stargate of not having the funds
The executives from the three tech companies-OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank-have also promised to collectively invest a total of $500billion into this project. OpenAI also said in a X post that they would begin deploying $100 billion into the project immediately.
But Elon Musk shot back at the company and speculated that the company doesn't even have the money to do so. Altman rebutted shortly after saying
"Wrong, as you surely know."
Trump framed the initiative as a testament to his administration’s vision and confidence in America’s potential. “This monumental undertaking is a resounding declaration of confidence in America’s future under new leadership,” he said.
This announcement comes shortly after Trump's earlier declaration of a $20 billion AI data center investment from UAE-based DAMAC Properties. Initial sites for the Stargate data centers are being evaluated nationwide, with the first few projects set to begin in Texas.
