Jennifer Garner Stars In Netflix Crypto Comedy ‘One Attempt Remaining’
Netflix is leaning into one of crypto’s most familiar anxieties with One Attempt Remaining, a new comedy centered on a divorced couple racing against time to recover access to a forgotten cryptocurrency wallet that has since grown to be worth millions.
Golden Globe–winning actress Jennifer Garner is set to star in the film, which has been greenlit by Netflix and will be directed by Kay Cannon, according to a statement released by the streaming platform on Thursday.
One Attempt Remaining follows an ex-couple who, years after their bitter divorce, learn that cryptocurrency they once won during a chaotic night on a cruise ship has appreciated dramatically in value. The problem is that neither of them remembers the password needed to access the wallet.
With only three days left before the account permanently expires, the pair are forced to retrace their steps from that night, revisiting old locations, unresolved emotions and shared memories in a final attempt to unlock their digital fortune. The race is not only against time and cryptographic security, but also against the emotional distance that led to their separation.
While framed as a romantic comedy, the film’s premise draws hit one of the common painpoitns of crypto users, where the unforgiving mechanics of crypto self-custody, where lost passwords and private keys often mean assets are gone for good.
Garner, who first rose to prominence as an action star in Alias before becoming a fixture in romantic comedies such as 13 Going on 30 and ensemble dramas like Juno, has already headlined several Netflix originals. Her previous projects with the platform include Yes Day, The Adam Project and Family Switch.
In addition to starring in the film, Garner will also serve as a producer alongside Shawn Levy and Dan Levine for 21 Laps, and Nicole King for Linden Productions. A release date has not yet been announced.
A Familiar Crypto Nightmare Turned Hollywood Plot
The storyline of One Attempt Remaining mirrors several real-life cases in which crypto holders permanently lost access to wallets containing vast sums.
Among the most well-known examples is former Ripple CTO Stefan Thomas, who misplaced the password to an IronKey device holding the private keys to 7,002 Bitcoin—now valued at hundreds of millions of dollars.
Another high-profile case involves James Howells, who mistakenly discarded a hard drive containing the private keys to 8,000 Bitcoin. His attempt to recover the device from a landfill has drawn international attention, and his story is now itself headed for Hollywood after a U.S. production company acquired the rights.
Security specialists have long warned that crypto’s strength—its lack of centralized recovery mechanisms—can also be its most punishing feature. Niels Zondervan, founder of Wallet Recovery NL explained
"Most people often have a hunch about what their password might be, but they can't quite put their finger on it."
By building its plot around this exact tension, One Attempt Remaining reflects how deeply crypto’s risks and quirks have entered mainstream awareness.
Netflix’s Crypto Week Takes a Serious Turn
The announcement of the film arrived on the same day Netflix found itself linked to a far less lighthearted crypto headline. Director Carl Rinsch, best known for 47 Ronin, was found guilty of defrauding Netflix after misappropriating $11 million in company funds and spending the money on crypto investments and luxury goods.
Rinsch had been commissioned in 2018 to produce the sci-fi series Conquest with $44 million in funding. Prosecutors later alleged he siphoned additional funds through bank accounts under his control, redirecting the money into speculative investments rather than production. He now faces up to 90 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for April 17, 2026.
Together, the two stories underscore crypto’s growing presence in Hollywood—not just as a plot device, but as a real financial force capable of driving both comedy and courtroom drama.
By turning the irreversible consequences of lost private keys into a romantic comedy premise, One Attempt Remaining signals how digital assets have moved from niche technical discussions into cultural shorthand. For better or worse, crypto’s high stakes are now familiar enough to anchor a mainstream Netflix feature.
