Crypto Influencer Sentenced for Cryptojacking Scheme Defrauding Cloud Providers
Crypto Influencer Sentenced for Cryptojacking Scheme Defrauding Cloud Providers
According to Cointelegraph, Charles O. Parks III, a crypto influencer known as “CP3O,” has been sentenced to one year and one day in prison by a Brooklyn federal court for orchestrating a cryptojacking operation that defrauded two major cloud computing providers. The Department of Justice (DOJ) revealed that Parks exploited fake corporate identities, including “MultiMillionaire LLC” and “CP3O LLC,” to deceive the providers into granting him elevated computing privileges. These privileges were then used to mine nearly $1 million worth of cryptocurrencies such as Ether (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), and Monero (XMR) between January and August 2021, resulting in over $3.5 million in defrauded resources. Cryptojacking involves unauthorized use of computing power or electricity to mine cryptocurrencies. Parks pleaded guilty to wire fraud in December, facing additional charges of money laundering and unlawful transactions, which could have led to a maximum prison sentence of 50 years. New York City Police Department commissioner Jessica S. Tisch commented on the sentencing, stating that Parks manipulated technology, stole millions in computer resources, and illegally mined cryptocurrency, and the sentencing holds him accountable for his deceitful actions. The DOJ detailed how Parks misled one provider by claiming he would use the computing resources to establish an online training firm focused on media, tech, and business strategy, purportedly serving 10,000 students. However, prosecutors clarified that there was no training company or students, and the resources were instead used for crypto mining. Parks deflected inquiries from the providers regarding questionable data usage and mounting unpaid subscription balances. Prosecutors also disclosed that Parks laundered the mined cryptocurrency through exchanges, a non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace, online payment processors, and banks, converting it into cash to fund luxury purchases, including a Mercedes-Benz, jewelry, and first-class travel. An indictment from April 2024 indicated that Parks created multiple accounts with subsidiaries of cloud computing and consumer electronic device companies headquartered in Seattle and Redmond, Washington. He was ordered to forfeit $500,000 and the Mercedes-Benz, with restitution to be determined later. Parks attempted to build a reputation as a crypto influencer by boasting about his profits online, sharing tips for achieving a “MultiMillionaire Mentality” in a September 2022 YouTube video. His website promoted a subscription-based self-improvement and wealth coaching program, offering consulting services and rewards paid in his crypto token. However, U.S. Attorney Nocella Jr stated that Parks was not the innovator he claimed to be, but rather a fraudster whose secret to wealth was lying and stealing.
