Ethereum Developers Plan Gas Limit Increase Following BPO Hard Fork

According to ChainCatcher, Ethereum's core developers have announced plans to increase the network's gas limit from 60 million to 80 million following the BPO hard fork scheduled for January 7. This move aims to enhance transaction throughput and reduce fees. Galaxy Digital's Vice President of Research, Kim, noted that Nethermind representatives believe developers are ready to implement this increase. However, Ethereum Foundation engineer Busa emphasized the need to complete two client optimizations first: the execution layer's blob response and the consensus layer's maximum blob flag. Increasing the gas limit will allow more transactions and smart contract operations per block. While this won't match the speed of Layer 1 solutions like Solana, it will strengthen Ethereum's appeal as a secure settlement layer while maintaining its decentralization advantages. Ethereum has already increased its gas limit three times this year, with the developer community aiming to reach 180 million by the end of 2026.
